Area roundup: GU women’s soccer off to best start; EWU’s Williams ties conference mark

India Jencks scored twice and Gonzaga blanked Hawaii 4-0 in Spokane to give the Zags their best start in program history at 4-0-1.

Sophia Viviano added a goal and a assist, Callie Best scored a goal and Isabel Jones made two saves in posting her third shutout of the season.

Gonzaga peppered Hawaii (2-4-0) with 23 shots, nine on target.

Eastern Washington 3, Cornell 1: Chloe Williams tied a Big Sky Conference career points record with a goal and the Eagles (3-3-0) beat the Big Red (0-2-0) in Ithaca, New York.

Williams, who scored her goal off an assist from Savannah Hoekstra, tied Amanda Ellsworth of Idaho State (2011-14) with 87 points. The goal was the 34th for Williams, tying her for fourth all-time in the conference.

An own goal made it 2-0 and Allison Raniere added the third in the first half. Emily Busselman made three saves in goal for EWU.

Washington State 5, Georgia Southern 0: Five Cougars scored and Ella Dederick made a pair of saves as WSU (3-1-1) posted its fourth shutout with a win over the Eagles (2-3-1) in Pullman.

Sofia Anker-Kofoed, Sydney Pulver, Morgan Weaver, Jamie Rita and Sarah Davidson scored with Maddy Haro picking up two assists and Shanya Dhindsa and Brianna Alger one apiece.

WSU outshot the visitors 15-5, 8-2 on target.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga 4, American 0: Three Zags had a goal and an assist in a shutout victory over the Eagles (1-3) in Spokane that gave Gonzaga (3-0) its best start since 2003.

Ben White, Nick Ulowetz and Joe Corner picked up two points each while Jalen Crisler also had a goal and Connor Ourada an assist.

Ben Willis made four saves for his second straight shutout.

Benedictine 2, Whitworth 1: Lukasz Sulka scored on a 32-yard free kick in the second overtime to give the 16th-ranked Eagles (1-1) the win over the Pirates (0-2) in Lisle, Illinois.

Drew Williams headed in a goal off an assist by Austin Cassity for Whitworth in the 17th minute to tie the match.

Hockey

Spokane 5, Seattle 2: Kailer Yamamoto and Jaret Anderson-Dolan scored third-period goals via assists from Ty Smith to snap a 2-2 tie and go on to win the Western Hockey League preseason game in Everett.

Matt Leduc added an empty-net goal.

Hayden Ostir, who had two goals in a 3-1 win over Vancouver on Saturday, scored the Chiefs’ first goal against the Thunderbirds with Ethan McIndoe adding another first-period score.

Milos Fafrak had two assists for Spokane with goaltender Dawson Weatherill making 34 saves.

The Chiefs continue their preseason slate with a game against the Portland Winterhawks at 3 p.m. Thursday in Kennewick.
