17 Reunites for Relief

When 14 chefs from the old 17 Restaurant in Houston reunite to raise funds for relief from Hurricane Harvey, Spokane bread baker Shaun Duffy Thompson will be among them.

Thompson owns Culture Breads and is preparing to open a storefront in the South Perry neighborhood. He worked as a sous chef at 17. Alumni from the former restaurant in The Sam Houston Hotel worked there from 2004 to 2009. They’re reuniting Oct. 1 for a special 17 Reunites for Relief dinner, which is already sold out. Proceeds will go to Southern Smoke, a nonprofit providing emergency funds to those who work in Houston’s hospitality industry and were affected by the storm.

Chefs are coming from around Houston, as close as San Antonio and as far away as New York City, Seattle, Denver and Portland, Maine, to participate in the dinner.
