Area roundup: Ben Willis helps Gonzaga earn draw with No. 20 Air Force

Ben Willis made five saves and Gonzaga (4-3-1) earned a 0-0 draw with visiting No. 20 Air Force (6-1-1) in a nonconference game on Friday.

Gonzaga’s Ben White had three shots, with one on goal. Joe Corner had a shot from inside the box in the second overtime, but Air Force’s John Wendt made the save to preserve the nil draw.

Gonzaga hosts Utah Valley on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Washington 0, Sacramento State 0: Emily Busselman made six saves and Eastern Washington (6-4-1, 0-0-1) earned a nil draw with visiting Sacramento State (5-4-1, 0-0-1) in double overtime in a Big Sky opener.

Chloe Williams led the Eagles with six shots. Eastern outshot the Hornets 16-13, the 11th game in a row that the Eagles have outshot their opponents.

Eastern hosts Northern Arizona on Sunday at noon.

Northern Arizona 2, Idaho 1: Adrian Nixt scored in the 92nd minute to lift visiting Northern Arizona (6-4-0, 1-0-0) over Idaho (4-5-1, 0-1-0) 2-1 in the Kibbie Dome in a Big Sky opener.

Idaho’s Taylor Brust started the scoring in the 29th minute off a feed from Ashlee Workman, and NAU’s Paige Maling tied it in the 47th minute following an original shot by Nixt.

The Vandals host Sacramento State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Volleyball

Whitworth 3, Willamette 0: Cassandra Mendoza had 13 kills, Gracie Meiners added 39 assists with 10 digs and Whitworth (6-6, 3-1) swept visiting Willamette (3-8, 0-3) in three sets (25-10, 25-22, 25-22) in a Northwest Conference match.

Emiko Kahler had nine kills with 10 digs and Taylor Wicht added a team-high 17 digs for the Pirates. Madison Douglas posted a hitting percentage of .636 with seven kills in 11 attacks.

Kendall Fox led Willamette with eight kills.

Whitworth plays at Lewis & Clark in Portland on Friday.

North Idaho 3, Blue Mountain 2: Halle Hess had 21 kills with 10 digs and North Idaho (12-5, 1-0) outlasted visiting Blue Mountain (6-10, 1-1) in five sets (20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-11, 15-13) in a Northwest Athletic Conference match.

The Cardinals were down two sets to one after three, but rallied to easily win the fourth set before edging out Blue Mountain in the deciding set.

Haylee Templeton dished out 52 assists for the Cardinals, while Hailee Etter and Kayla Neumann added 12 kills apiece.

North Idaho hosts Yakima Valley on Saturday at 2 p.m.
