Area roundup: Gonzaga volleyball rallies in the final set, beats Pacific 3-2
Jenna Kuehn had 14 kills with eight digs and the Bulldogs rallied in the final set to edge the Tigers in five sets (16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 26-28, 15-12) in a West Coast Conference match.
The Bulldogs (7-7 2-0) fought back behind a four-point run in the final set to take a 6-4 lead. They stretched their lead over Pacific (6-7, 1-1) to as much as four points before ending the set 15-12.
Alyse Whitaker had 12 kills and five digs, and Faith Smith dished out 29 assists for the Bulldogs.
Gonzaga plays at Santa Clara on Thursday in Santa Clara, California.
Washington State 3, Arizona 1: Taylor Mims had 16 kills, three aces and eight digs as the Cougars (12-3, 1-1) earned their first Pac-12 victory with a win over the Wildcats (7-4, 1-1) in four sets (25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 25-17) in Tucson, Arizona.
The Cougars jumped to a quick 2-0 lead before barely falling short of a sweep with a narrow loss in the third set, 26-24.
Ashley Brown dished out 26 assists for WSU, and Alexis Dirige had 20 digs and a pair of aces.
WSU plays at Southern California in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Idaho 3, Montana 0: Haylee Mathis had a game-high 36 assists and four blocks as the Vandals (7-6, 2-0) swept the Grizzlies (5-10, 0-2) in three sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-20) in a Big Sky match in Moscow, Idaho.
Alycia Wodke led the Vandals with 26 digs and Kaela Straw had 13 kills and four blocks.
Idaho plays North Dakota in Grand Forks on Thursday.
Eastern Washington 3, Montana State 2: Ashley Seiler tallied 18 digs, eight kills and a pair of aces, and the Eagles (5-6, 2-0) fought back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Bobcats (4-7, 0-2) in a Big Sky match in Cheney.
The teams swapped leads four times in the final set before the Eagles capitalized on a service error by MSU’s Hannah Scott and Taylor Larsen’s back-to-back kills that ended the set in EWU’s favor, 16-14.
Regan Harr had 16 digs and dished out 32 assists and Kahle Elliott had 13 kills for the Eagles.
Eastern Washington plays at Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, on Thursday.
North Idaho 3, Yakima Valley 1: Kayla Neumann had 24 digs and 14 kills to lead the Cardinals past the Yaks in four sets (21-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-15) in a Northwest Conference game in Coeur d’Alene.
Haylee Templeton dished out 48 assists and Halle Hess had 16 kills and 11 digs for the Cardinals.
North Idaho hosts Walla Walla on Friday at 6 p.m.
Women’s soccer
Whitworth 1, George Fox 0: Kathryn Biscoff scored on a penalty kick and the Pirates (4-3, 3-0) defeated the Bruins (3-3, 1-2) in Newberg, Oregon, to remain undeafeated in the Northwest Conference.
Biscoff’s second goal of the season came in the 23rd minute.
George Fox attempted to tie the score before halftime with a shot by Abby Anderson, but Molly Webster’s save kept the Bruins off the board. Anderson’s shot snapped Whitworth’s 160-minute streak with no shots on goal.
The Bruins outshot the Pirates 12-7 and had a 5-3 edge over Whitworth in shots on goal.
Whitworth plays at Pacific (Ore.) in Forrest Grove, Oregon, on Sunday.
California 1, Washington 0: Anja Koehler scored the lone goal of the night, lifting the Golden Bears (8-1-0) to a win over the Huskies (7-3-0) in a Pac-12 Conference game in Seattle.
The bears outshot Washignton 10-6, including nine shots on goal. Huskies goalkeeper Sarah Shimer had eight saves and Kimberly Keever had Washington’s only shot on goal.
Washington hosts Utah on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Walla Walla 2, CC Spokane 1: Dominique Velazquez scored the winning goal in the 87th minute to lift the Warriors over the visiting Sasquatch in a Northwest Athletic Conference match.
Alli Smeltzer scored CC Spokane’s lone goal of the day with a shot in the 59th minute that tied the score at 1.
CC Spokane plays at Treasure Valley in Ontario, Oregon, on Friday.
North Idaho 2, Columbia Basin 0: North Idaho waited until the 62nd minute to finally score, but its goals went unanswered as the Cardinals (5-3-0, 3-1-0) blanked the Hawks (4-2-2, 3-2-1) in a Northwest Athletic Conference game in Pasco.
In the 57th minute, NIC’s Zoe Lee attemped to get past goalkeeper Jenelle Garza but was fouled. Marisol Guerrero converted the penalty kick to gain a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Guerrero fed the ball to Linnea Pretzer, who fought her way through a tackle and then scored with a shot to the right side of the goal in the 72nd minute.
North Idaho will head to Pendleton, Oregon, to play at Blue Mountain on Friday.
Men’s soccer
Whitworth 1, Pacific Lutheran 1 (2OT): Micah Weller scored in the 30th minute and the Pirates (3-4-1, 1-1-1) earned a draw with the Lutes (3-3-2, 1-1-1) in a Northwest Conference match in Portland, Oregon.
Weller’s fourth goal of the season sent the Pirates into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Northwest Conference goals leader Eddie Na equalized the score with an unassisted goal in 68th minute.
Whitworth plays at Puget Sound in Tacoma on Sunday.
CC Spokane 2, Walla Walla 1: Chase Reidt had an assist and scored the winning goal on a penalty kick, lifting the visiting Sasquatch to a win over the Warriors in a Northwest Athletic Conference match.
Reidt assisted Ian Schimandle in a score in the 5th minute, giving the Sasquatch a quick 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later Walla Walla fired back, tying the score at 1 behind Juan Martinez’s shot.
Reidt converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to grab the lead for good.
CC Spokane plays at Treasure Valley in Ontario, Oregon, on Friday.
Columbia Basin 4, North Idaho 2: Jesus Delgado scored back-to-back goals and Israel Gonzalez also had a pair of scores to lift the Hawks (7-0-0, 5-0-0) in a win over the Cardinals (3-5-0, 1-2-0) ub a Northwest Athletic Conference game in Pasco.
Gonzalez also had an assist for the Hawks, feeding the ball to Delgado in the 59th minute to take 3-1 lead.
Cade Roske tied the score at one with a goal for the Cardinals in the 32nd minute. Cody Bentley had North Idaho’s last goal of the day with a shot in the 88th minute.
North Idaho plays at Blue Mountain in Pendleton, Oregon, on Friday.
