Gonzaga men’s and women’s soccer teams pick up victories

Sam Olson scored in the 70th minute to lift Gonzaga to a 2-1 men’s soccer victory over Utah Valley on Sunday in Spokane.

Christo Michaelson sent a free kick into the box where Olson headed the ball into the top of the net. Michaelson headed in a cross in the 23rd minute off a cross from Joe Corner for the Zags (5-3-1).

The Wolverines (3-5) scored in the 41st minute.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga 2, Seattle 1 (2OT): Callie Best dribbled through the defense to score in the 102nd minute and give the Zags (8-1-1) a victory over Seattle (4-5-1) in Spokane.

Madeline Gotta scored just over a minute into the match for Gonzaga with the Redhawks tying the match in the 40th.

Eastern Washington 4, Northern Arizona 0: Four Eagles scored as they picked up their first conference win of the season, beating the Lumberjacks (6-5-0, 1-1-0 Big Sky) in Cheney.

Chloe Williams got the opening goal, which put her alone in second place in the Big Sky for career goals with 37, two off the record held by Amanda Ellensworth of Idaho State (2011-14). Delaney Romero, Aimie Inthoulay and Devan Talley also scored. EWU (7-4-1, 1-0-1) had a 10-1 advantage on shots on goal.

Whitworth 1, Pacific 0: Leah Corra tapped in a low cross in the 52nd minute and the Pirates (5-3-0, 4-0-0) remained unbeaten in the Northwest Conference with the win over the Boxers (0-6-2, 0-3-1) in Forest Grove, Oregon.

Idaho 0, Sacramento State 0: Makayla Presgrave made five saves in turning in her fourth shutout of the season to give the Vandals (4-5-2, 0-1-1 Big Sky) a draw with the Hornets (5-4-2, 0-0-2) in Moscow, Idaho.

The Vandals are 0-1-2 in overtime games.

Volleyball

Washington 3, Arizona State 2: The seventh-ranked Huskies (12-1, 2-0) won the final three sets to beat the Sun Devils (10-4, 0-2). Set scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-10.

Men’s golf

Gonzaga finished 10th in the 13-team Maui Jim Invitational played at Desert Forest GC in Carefree, Arizona. The Zags finished at 34-over 898 over three rounds. Nick Nolan, Tyler Munetake and Ben DuBois led Gonzaga, all three finishing in a four-way for 43rd place at 11 over.

Alex Del Rey Gonzalez took individual honors at 10-under 206 for a three-stroke victory and led the Sun Devils to the team title at 7 under, one stroke better than Georgia Tech.

Whitworth finished second in the Puget Sound Invitational at Gold Mountain GC in Bremerton. The Pirates ended the two rounds at 25 over, 22 strokes back of Pacific Lutheran. Triston Hartfiel led Whitworth, finishing in a five-way tie at 9-over 153, 12 strokes behind victor Mitchell Baldridge of PLU.

Women’s golf

Whitworth took second place in the five-team Puget Sound Invitational played at Gold Mountain GC in Bremerton. The Pirates finished the two rounds at 88 over, 41 strokes back of George Fox.

Whitworth teammates Jaymie Pentony and Amy Wagner tied for fourth place at 16-over 159, seven strokes back of winner Alexandria McMenamin of George Fox.

Hockey

Grand Forks 7, Spokane 2: The Border Bruins (5-2-0-0-0, 10 points) broke open the KIJHL game with four third-period goals in beating the host Braves. Trail Thompson and Brayden Leifker-Lloyd scored for Spokane (2-3-1-0-1, 6).
