Man dead after apparent domestic violence incident in Elk

Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a domestic violence dispute in north Spokane County that escalated into an attempted murder and ended in an apparent suicide.

On Tuesday night, at about 10 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a shooting behind Miller’s One Stop Grocery, 39824 N. Newport Highway, in Elk, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. A caller reported hearing gunshots behind the store and said an adult male had been shot.

Firefighters from Spokane County Fire District 4 and medical personnel from Deer Park Ambulance arrived behind the store and began life-saving measures on the man, who was still breathing. A Life Flight helicopter was requested, and the man was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The man’s identity will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner.

Deputies said their investigation determined there was a domestic violence incident behind the store that escalated into the man shooting at an adult female as she fled the scene in a vehicle. Deputies said the man then turned the firearm on himself. The uninjured female is safe.
