10 Under $10: Fun that won’t set you back a ton

1. A Full night of JAZZ! 6 p.m. Today, House of Soul, 120 N. Wall St. Night kicks off with a performance by saxophonist Matt Henson, a student at EWU. Pianist Brian Ward, director of jazz studies at WSU, will perform at 7 with Chris Parkin, a saxophone teacher at Whitworth. At 9 p.m., the Imagine Collective Bade-McMurphy, Brendan McMurphy, Riley Gray and Ash Madison – will perform original music, modern jazz and improvised forms. 4. Walking Papers 8 p.m. Sunday, the Bartlett, 228 W. Sprague Ave. The Seattle-based blues-rock band, which features Jeff Angell of the Missionary Position and Barrett Martin, formerly of the Screaming Trees, and even sometimes Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan (but not on this tour) will swing through Spokane in support of their second record, “WP2.” Joining in the fun are Dead Serious Lovers and Bar Talk. 5. Campus Q&A with Katherine Boo 4 p.m. Monday, Whitworth University, 300 W. Hawthorne Road. Whitworth University welcomes Katherine Boo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist, as featured speaker for the spring President’s Leadership Forum. Boo is the author of the New York Times best-selling book “Behind the Beautiful Forevers,” which won the 2012 National Book Award for nonfiction. She’ll speak on campus ahead of her talk at Whitworth’s President’s Leadership Forum on Tuesday morning. (509) 777-3449. Admission: FREE

6. Travis Brass Noon. Wednesday, Whitworth University, 300 W. Hawthorne Road. One of the cornerstone ensembles of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West, Travis Brass, will perform a concert of patriotic and classical music at the Myhre Recital Hall at Whitworth University. Other local performances include 8 p.m. April 27 with the Whitworth Wind Symphony at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave. (tickets $5-$7) and at 2:30 p.m. April 28 with the Spokane Brass Quintet at the Chapel at Gonzaga University, 502 E. 7. Annual Spring Dance Concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday and April 27 and 28, with a 2 p.m. matinee April 28, Magnuson Theatre at Gonzaga University, 502 E. Boone Ave. Artistic Director Suzanne Ostersmith and the dance faculty present the annual Spring Dance Concert, featuring a combination of faculty and student choreography, all student performances and lighting design. 8. Visiting Artist Jim Hodges 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Spokane Falls Community College, Building 17, Student Union Building rec center, room 134, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive. Jim Hodges, who was born and raised in Spokane and who now lives in New York, is a painter and multi-media artist who creates installations large and small. He returns to Spokane as part of the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Watch the film “Jim Hodges,” narrated by the artist himself, and stick around afterward for a Q-&A. 9. Poetry Book Launch: Stephen Pitters 6:15 p.m., Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 W. First Ave. As National Poetry Month speeds to a close, celebrate with the launch of Spokane poet Stephen Pitters’s new book “Prerecorded.” Program includes a no-host beer and wine reception prior to the program, with the opportunity to meet the author, followed a reading, and concluding with a signing. 10. Get Lit presents chef Bryant Terry 7 p.m. Tuesday, Spokane Community College, 1810 N. Greene St. Bryant Terry is a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award-winning chef, educator and author renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just and sustainable food system. On Tuesday, Terry will be present a lecture on his life as an eco-chef, food activist and author of several vegan friendly cook books. His lecture will be followed by a Q&A. (509) 533-7363.
