Area roundup: Idaho’s Sophie Hausmann seizes Big Sky tournament lead with 7-under 65

Idaho junior Sophie Hausmann matched her Big Sky Conference Championship single-round record with a 7-under-par 65 on Saturday to seize the lead and put the Vandals in first place at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Hausmann, who also shot 65 at the championship as a freshman, eagled No. 13 and 14 on her way to the second-lowest round in the NCAA this season.

Hausmann, the Big Sky Player of the Year, also had three consecutive birdies on the front nine. Heading into the third and final round, she stands at 6-under 138, four shots ahead of three players, including teammate Michelle Kim.

The Vandals, at 7-over 583, lead Sacramento State by five shots.

Eastern Washington’s Madalyn Ardueser fired a 70 and moved up to fifth place at 145. Alexa Clark is another two shots back for the Eagles, who are in fourth place at 595 after a season-best round of 289.

Baseball

California 5, Washington 2: Jared Horn worked seven sharp innings and Andrew Vaughn had three RBIs to lead the Golden Bears (23-13, 9-8 Pac-12) past the Huskies (17-17, 8-6) in Berkeley, California.

Horn (5-4) scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs, striking out four and walking one. Vaughn had an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer to left-center in the third to give Cal a 3-2 lead.

Joe Wainhouse highlighted UW’s two-run first with an RBI double.

Washington State 11, Santa Clara 3: Scotty Sunitsch struck out seven in six innings, and Danny Sinatro and Cal Waterman homered to guide a 13-hit outburst as the Cougars (12-20) defeated the Broncos (16-20) in nonconference play at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Sunitsch (4-1) took a 9-0 lead into the sixth before surrendering a pair of homers. Nick Strange threw three innings of one-hit ball, with three strikeouts, for his first save.

WSU took a 2-0 lead in the second on Waterman’s two-run homer. Sinatro had the Cougars’ first inside-the-park homer since 2013 during a four-run third.

CC Spokane 7-10, Treasure Valley 0-0: Nick Flesher struck out 11 in the opener and Marcus Cain fanned eight in the second game as the Sasquatch (25-9, 12-4 Northwest Athletic Conference) swept the Chukars (7-24, 1-15) at Spokane Falls CC.

Isaac Wersland and Mitch Dean homered in the opener. Dean finished 3 for 4 with two runs and Jadan Vandervert had three RBIs in the second game.

The Sasquatch remained two games behind Yakima Valley in the East Region.

Softball

(3) UCLA 3, (1) Washington 2: Madeline Jelenicki hit a two-out solo homer to left field in the seventh to give the Bruins (39-3, 14-3 Pac-12) their second consecutive win over the top-ranked Huskies (41-4, 12-4) in Los Angeles.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead on Kelly Burdick’s two-run double in the first. Aaliyah Jordan’s two-run homer in the fourth tied the game, and Bruins reliever Rachel Garcia (15-1) held UW to one hit over 4 1/3 innings.

George Fox 10, Whitworth 3: Madison Sorensen (21-3) settled down after a rough start and Savannah Vargas hit a grand slam as the host Bruins (34-18) eliminated the Pirates (24-18) from the Northwest Conference Tournament in Newberg, Oregon.

Vargas finished with five RBIs, including her slam in the third that gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead.

Sorensen allowed seven hits and three earned runs but checked the Pirates for the final six innings. Sara Gayer had a two-run double and scored on Kelsey Downey’s single to spark Whitworth’s three-run first.

The Bruins moved on and eliminated Pacific later in the day. George Fox must defeat Linfield twice on Sunday to win the tournament.

Track and field

Kayla Leland won the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs to lead Whitworth’s women to second place at the Northwest Conference Championships in McMinnville, Oregon.

Leland, who also won the 10,000 on Friday, ran a season-best 4 minutes, 33.25 seconds in the 1,500 and 17:39.68 in the 5,000.

The Pirates scored 174 points to trail George Fox’s 226.

Whitworth’s Andrew Bloom broke the school’s men’s javelin record while finishing second at 229 feet, 5 inches. The Pirates (127 points) placed third.

  • Eastern Washington senior Leanne Asper broke the school record in the 800 by running 2:10.61 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California. Asper, who also broke the school indoor record in February, topped Katie Mahoney’s mark (2:10.96) from 2016. Also at Mt. SAC, EWU’s Keshun McGee won the men’s triple jump at 51- 3/4.
  • Noland Wick won the 100 (11.21), JJ Curry took the 200 (22.53), and both teamed on Community Colleges of Spokane’s winning 400 relay team (43.40) during the Spokane Memorial Meet at SFCC.

Women’s tennis

Ella Riddle defeated Erica Lee at No. 1 singles and teamed with Basia Kopecka to win No. 1 doubles as Linfield (14-1) posted a 6-0 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference semifinal at McMinnville, Oregon.

The Pirates finished their season 7-11 with one senior on their roster – Jennifer Adams.
