Prep notebook: Rogers and Central Valley boys soccer forced to a do-over

One week ago, Rogers boys soccer thought it had earned a landmark victory for the program, knocking off perennial power Central Valley 2-1 in a shootout.
The game was filled with disputed calls, the most controversial a penalty kick with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime for Central Valley which was ruled no goal based upon a concurrent CV foul.
After the game, Central Valley appealed and won its case. The game will resume Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Rogers with the penalty kick and 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
A league representative explained that the game officials made a mistake applying Law 14 from the Laws of the Game, which states if an infraction occurs by the kicking team during a made penalty kick, the kick is retaken, and the ball is not awarded to the defending team as it was in the disputed game.
Central Valley (6-3-1, 5-0-0-1, 16 points) is two points behind Greater Spokane League leaders Ferris and Lewis and Clark, in fourth place among 4A teams. The fourth place team in the GSL will face the fifth place in a play-in to the District 8 tournament on Monday.
Shadle’s Brooks picks up win No. 400
Shadle Park baseball swept Mead in a doubleheader on Monday, giving Highlanders veteran coach Ron Brooks his 400th career win in his 34th season as head coach.
Brooks is a 2008 inductee to the Washington State Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame.
“I have been very fortunate to work with great assistants, teachers and players and have had the great support of my family,” Brooks said.
“I’m a Shadle grad (class of 1973),” he continued. “It’s a great place to coach and teach. It’s a school with a fine tradition.”
Asked if any team or game stood out to him over 34 years, he demurred. “If I mentioned one game or team, I’d have to call you right back to mention 10 more,” he said. “At the end of the day, I have a lot of memories of good teams and great kids.”
Shadle Park (9-9, 8-8) is in second place among GSL 3A teams entering the final weekend of regular season play.
The District 8 3A tournament starts with the play-in game on Monday between the GSL No. 4 seed and the Mid-Columbia Conference No. 3 seed. The first round starts on Wednesday at higher seed sites.
Sandpoint names football coach
Sandpoint announced via Twitter the hiring of Ryan Knowles as head football coach, replacing George Yarno, who resigned after two seasons.
Knowles is a 1997 Sandpoint grad who was a four-year starter at defensive end at Idaho, earning All-Big West honors in 2000.
He spent 12 years at Divison I Colgate as assistant football coach, defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. He coached one season at Idaho as a graduate assistant coaching on the defensive line before moving to Colgate. He has also coached at Kentridge and Kentlake High Schools.
He coached 17 All-Patriot League players and helped the Raider defense lead the nation and set a program record in 2016 by allowing just 69.4 rushing yards per game. Colgate also finished second nationally in sacks per game at 3.4.
John Knowles, Ryan’s father, was a longtime Sandpoint assistant.
