Area roundup: DJ Sanders’ ninth-inning grand slam lifts Oregon softball over Washington

DJ Sanders belted a ninth-inning grand slam and finished with five RBIs, and Oregon bested Washington 7-2 in a Pac-12 game in Seattle on Friday.

Megan Kleist (16-5) struck out 14 in a complete-game effort for the No. 2-ranked Ducks (39-7, 13-3 Pac-12).

Taran Alvevo (22-4) struck out eight for the fourth-ranked Huskies (41-6, 12-6), who have lost four in a row.

Columbia Basin 16-15, CC Spokane 14-5: Ivey Uppinghouse smashed three home runs as the Hawks outslugged the Sasquatch to open a Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

Suzy Lubanski also homered for CBC, while Katelyn Sage went deep for CCS.

Uppinghouse and Lubanski each homered again in the second game as CBC (11-25, 7-17 NWAC) polished off the sweep.

Tia Pau and Hannah Springs notched two hits each for the Sasquatch (15-18, 9-16).

North Idaho 7-12, Wenatchee Valley 6-4: The Cardinals (38-3, 23-2) continued their dominant play with a sweep of the visiting Knights (22-10, 18-6).

Men’s tennis

Mark Kovacs topped Stefan Cooper in straight sets in No. 1 singles, and Idaho beat Weber State 4-0 in the Big Sky championship semifinals in Phoenix.

Kovacs also won in No. 1 doubles while partnering with Carlos Longhi Neto.

UI will meet Montana Saturday in the final.

Women’s tennis

Stanford’s Michaela Gordon defeated Washington State’s Michaela Bayerlova at No. 1 singles to clinch a 4-0 victory for the Cardinal in the semifinals of the Pac-12 championships in Ojai, California.

Top-seeded Stanford will face No. 2 UCLA in the title match Saturday.

Loyola Marymount 4, Gonzaga 3: Veronica Miroshnich and Eva Marie Voracek topped Sophie Whittle and Graviela Rosas in the No. 1 doubles match as the Lions ousted the Bulldogs in the West Coast Conference semifinals in Claremont, California.

LMU will play No. 1 seed Pepperdine in the finals.

Idaho 4, Southern Utah 1: Marianna Petrei knocked off Ghita Nassik in the top singles match, and the Vandals advanced to the Big Sky finals with a 4-1 win over the Thunderbirds in Phoenix.

Petrei and Maria Tavares earned another comfortable win for Idaho in the top doubles match.

Idaho will face Northern Arizona Saturday for the league crown.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Macey Weitz cleared 12 feet, 11.75 inches to win the pole vault on the first day of the Oregon State High Performance Meet in Corvallis, Oregon.

Eagle teammate Elizabeth Prouty came in third in the vault at 12-6, while EWU’s Tim Beard finished second in the hammer with a 191-9 throw.

Idaho’s Andrea Condie placed second in the 5,000 with a time of 16:22.44.

The meet concludes Saturday.
