Gonzaga baseball beats LMU 5-3 with big contributions from Ernie Yake, Casey Legumina

Freshman Ernie Yake had three hits and Casey Legumina pitched a three-inning save to lead Gonzaga to a 5-3 victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

After giving up three runs in the third inning to fall behind 3-2, Gonzaga (21-19, 11-9 WCC) battled back on offense and shut out LMU (20-23, 12-8) over the last six innings. Gonzaga posted single runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth on the way to the win.

GU starter Alek Jacob worked 6 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. He gave way to Legumina, who struck out six in his three innings of work and collected his league-leading 11th save.

Yake led the way on offense with a 3-for-4 night that included two runs scored and a stolen base. Austin Pinorini had two hits and reached four times, adding an RBI and a run scored, and Branson Trube drove in two runs.

The Zags and Lions will play the series finale at noon Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
