Garland District gets ready to party at annual street fair

By Stephanie Hammett The Spokesman-Review

This Saturday over 160 local vendors, artists, musicians, dance groups, and car enthusiasts will take over the streets surrounding Garland Theater (924 W. Garland Ave.) for the annual Garland Street Fair.

A mainstay of the street fair, the Garland Get Down Rod and Custom Show, is returning with over 100 entries vehicles set to be on display. Awards such as “Best Custom” and “Most Outlandish” are slated to be handed out to motorcycle and car entry owners. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with awards to be announced starting at 3 p.m. Car set-up begins at 8:30 a.m. Entry cost for vehicles still hoping to join is $15; it’ll be free to check them out, however.

The kids’ area, hosted by the South Hill Kiwanis Club, will be full of arts, crafts and games including last year’s hit “Ping Pong Toss.” Players will throw for the chance to go home with a goldfish.

More than 15 restaurants will open their doors during the street fair including local favorites Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle (802 W. Garland Ave.), Ferguson’s Cafe (804 W. Garland Ave.), Kim’s Teriyaki (927 W. Garland Ave.) and Streetwise Cafe (733 W. Garland Ave.).

Four out of the five dance groups scheduled to perform are coming to the street fair for the first time. Among the newcomers, Spokane Aerial Performance Arts will be performing a variety of contemporary circus and aerial work. The show begins at 11:10 a.m. on the Wall Street stage.

Nine musical events are scheduled throughout the day including performances by Super Sparkle, Sara Brown Band, An Dochas, and Lavoy on the Post Street stage and Kori Ailene and Rusted Hand on the Wall Street stage. Musical styles range from indie/alternative to western swing/honky tonk. The first show start at 10 a.m.

The Spokane Art School, meanwhile, is hosting a free art-making event called Art on the Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. With help from artists Katey Mandley and Megan Perkins, fairgoers will be invited to make art on one of several large easels stationed outside the school, at 811 W. Garland.

Improv shows will be performed on the hour at the Blue Door Theater (815 W Garland Ave).
