Deputy identified in shooting near Deer Park

Deputy Daniel Middlebos (Spokane County Sheriff’s Office)
From staff reports

The Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a man near Deer Park last week has been identified as Daniel Middlebos.

Middlebos was hired by the sheriff’s office in 2003. He has over 28 years of law enforcement experience, according to a sheriff’s office news release. He has earned several commendations and multiple certifications, including two life-saving awards and a Certificate of Commendation “for successfully deescalating and assisting a suicidal person,” according to the release.

On Aug. 3, Middlebos was the first law enforcement member to reach the the area of North Sherman and West Findley roads where, according to reports, an armed and distressed male had crashed his car.

Middlebos confronted the man, identified this week as 31-year-old Josh A. Martin, and attempted to deescalate the situation. However, Martin raised a gun toward the deputy, and Middlebos fired, striking him. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Spokane Investigative Regional Response has taken over investigation of the incident.
