The top 80 high school distance runners (40 boys and 40 girls) from across the country will compete in the 40th Annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.
Two local runners, Allie Janke and Erinn Hill of North Central, qualified for the girls race.
Janke, the 2018 State 3A champion, placed second in the regional qualifying meet last weekend in Walnut, California. Hill, the 2017 State 3A champion, placed ninth.
NC’s girls were state team champs in impressive fashion, finishing with a record-low 21 points.
The Foot Locker Cross Country Championships are comprised of regionals in the Midwest (Kenosha, Wisconsin), Northeast (Bronx, New York), South (Charlotte, North Carolina) and West (Walnut). The top 10 boys and top 10 girls from each region’s seeded races qualified to compete at nationals.
Spokane hosts national club races
The 2018 USA Track & Field Club Cross Country National Championships are Saturday at Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane Valley.
Plantes Ferry, the course for a long list of past championship events, hosted USATF Club Cross Country National Championships in 2008. Race organizers expect fast course conditions and hope runners will produce top times.
An anticipated 1,300 athletes will partake in the championships, competing as teams and individuals.
Matthew Centrowitz, the reigning Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters, is scheduled to participate, in addition to members of Team USATF who have competed at the Olympics, world championships or other national team events.
“Spokane is thrilled to be hosting the 2018 USATF Club Cross Country Championships,” Eric Sawyer, CEO of Spokane Sports Commission said via press release.
