Area basketball roundup: Big second half leads Whitworth to rout of La Verne

Whitworth’s men’s team erupted for 71 second-half points, breezing past visiting La Verne 115-65 on Saturday in a nonconference game.

The Pirates (6-1) hit 69 percent from the field (31 of 45) after halftime, including 16 of their first 22 shots from the floor. Kyle Roach led Whitworth, scoring 23 points in just 23 minutes, while Isaiah Hernandez added 15 points and Sam Lees had 10. Coach Matt Logie cleared the bench, playing reserves in the final 11 minutes as the Pirates received points from 15 players; Rowan Anderson (eight) and Reed Brown (seven) hit season highs. Isaiah Knox’s 14 led the Leopards (1-5).

The Pirates host D’Youville College Monday night at 7.

Lane CC 94, CC Spokane 91: Tarik Cool’s 31 points powered the Titans past the Sasquatch at the Dale J. Bates Invitational in Eugene. All five Spokane starters scored in double figures, led by Dedrick Pakootas’ points. Edgar Najera (17), Isaiah Gotell (15), and JR Delgado and Asher Cox (14 apiece) rounded out the effort. The Sasquatch bench was outscored 38-8 by its Lane counterparts. Tashon Brown and Lucas Wilson added 15 each off the bench for the 7-0 Titans. CC Spokane (6-2) faces Southwestern Oregon today at noon.

Women

Wyoming 64, Idaho 61: Taylor Rusk and Bailee Cotton scored 13 points apiece as the 6-2 Cowgirls held off the Vandals in Laramie, Wyoming in nonconference play. Mikayla Ferenz scored 18 points, Taylor Pierce added 14 and Natalie Klinker contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for Idaho (3-5).

Whitworth 60, Colorado College 52: Madison Moffat’s 16 points led a balanced attack as the Pirates defeated the Tigers at the Kim Evanger Raney Classic in Walla Walla. Talia Brandner added 15 points, Camy Aguinaldo 14 and a team-high eight rebounds and six assists for Whitworth (6-2).

CC Spokane 64, Lower Columbia 49: Emily Fletcher scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Sasquatch downed the Red Devils at the Everett Tournament. Jessica Olson added 12 points and nine boards for CC Spokane (4-1), which faces Big Bend today at 4 p.m. in the title game.
