GSL boys: Gonzaga Prep ousted by University School in Les Schwab Invitational semifinal

Vernon Carey Jr. scored 19 points and University School (FL) (10-2) edged Gonzaga Prep (8-2) 58-53 in a semifinal at the Les Schwab Invitational in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Sharks finished second at the GEICO Nationals last season and were the Florida 5A state champs. Carey, a 6-foot-10 senior, is committed to Duke next season. Scottie Barnes, a 6-foot-8 junior who is being recruited by several Division I schools, added 11 points.

G-Prep was led by Gonzaga commit Anton Watson with 19 points and Liam Lloyd scored 13 points.

Prep led by one late on a field goal by Lloyd, but Carey responded at the other end, then the Sharks made four straight free throws to seal it.

Gonzaga Prep faces Jefferson (OR) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the tournament third-place game.

Clark Cochran Classic

Lewis and Clark 61, Palmer (AK) 39: Griffin Effenberger scored 25 points with six 3-pointers and the visiting Tigers (4-6) beat the Moose (1-3) in Ketchikan, Alaska. Xavier Guillory added 10 points for LC, while Lavar Marshall led Palmer with 10 points.

Franklin Tournament

University 67, Franklin 60: Marcus Lenker scored 25 points and the Titans (8-3) topped the Quakers (5-4) in a tourney consolation game in Seattle. Logan Dreher scored 17 points and Logan Phillips added 15 for U-Hi. Maurice Bennett paced tournament host Franklin with 32 points.

Bothell Holiday Tourney

Central Valley 71, Jackson 62: Kyle Clay scored 34 points with five 3-pointers, Quinn Johnson added 13 and the Bears (6-3) beat the Timberwolves (6-3) in Bothell, Washington. Ben Olesen led Jackson with 18 points.

Eagle Holiday Classic

Shadle Park 71, Riverside 46: Jake Groves scored 16 points and the Highlanders (6-3) topped the Rams (4-7). Tavion Rainwater added 15 points for Shadle Park. Jordan Nortz led Riverside with 20 points.

Nonleague

Mt. Spokane 69, Cheney 52: Jerry Twenge scored 28 points, Tyson Degenhart added 21 and the Wildcats (9-1) defeated the visiting Blackhawks (4-4). Kaiden Custer led Cheney with 23 points.
