Area college basketball: Jordan Lester’s late shot give Whitworth win over Johns Hopkins

Jordan Lester made a layup with 1.2 seconds remaining, and Whitworth’s men’s basketball team edged Johns Hopkins 76-74 Saturday at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.

Kyle Roach led the Pirates (9-1) with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Lester finished with 14 points and Ben College scored 13, including the tying 3-pointer with 25 seconds left.

Joey Kern paced the Blue Jays (8-4) with 23 points.

North Idaho 102, Central Arizona 73: RayQuan Evans totaled 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and the Cardinals routed the Vaqueros in the consolation final of the Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout in Mesa, Arizona.

Nate Pryor added 15 points and Alphonso Anderson tacked on 14 points and nine boards for NIC (11-2).

Richard Polanco led CAC (4-9) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Everett 99, CC Spokane 96: Shadle Park’s Markieth Brown scored 33 points as the host Trojans (8-6) held off the Sasquatch (9-4).

Isaiah Gotell scored 22 points to lead five CCS players in double figures. Edgar Najera added 20 points and Garrett White totaled 18 points and nine rebounds.

Women’s basketball

Grace Kirscher and Violet Kapri Morrow scored 13 points each, and Eastern Washington rallied to defeat Weber State 64-58 in a Big Sky Conference opener in Ogden, Utah.

The Eagles (2-8) trailed 56-44 in the fourth quarter but closed with a 20-2 run.

Kayla Watkins and Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman led the Wildcats (3-8) with 17 points apiece.

Idaho 86, Idaho State 72: Mikayla Ferenz had 29 points and six rebounds to lead the Vandals to a win over the Bengals in Pocatello to open Big Sky play.

Idaho (4-6) shot 45.2 percent (14 of 31) on 3-pointers.

Grace Kenyon led ISU (5-5) with 27 points.

William Smith 78, Whitworth 49: Juliana Gamboa scored 21 points and Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Herons (4-4) topped the Pirates (6-4) in the Regals Classic in Thousand Oaks, California.

Madison Moffat and Megan Dorney led Whitworth with eight points each.

North Idaho 50, Lower Columbia 47: Tournament MVP Keara Simpson notched 15 points, including the winning shot in the final minute, and the Cardinals (10-2) edged the host Red Devils (8-7) to win the Lower Columbia Tournament in Longview, Washington.

Nizhoni Wheeler led Lower Columbia with 18 points.

CC Spokane 58, Bellevue 48: Jessica Olson finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and the Sasquatch (10-1) knocked off the Bulldogs (4-9) to finish the Skagit Valley Tournament in Mount Vernon, Washington.

Katelyn Ostrowski tacked on 13 points for CCS, while Amanda Luckett led Bellevue with 17 points.
