Area roundup: Colorado edges WSU women, 72-69, as Hristova injured
Kennedy Leonard scored 15 points, including three free throws in the final minute, and host Colorado held on to defeat Washington State 72-69 on Sunday in Boulder.
WSU’s leading scorer, Borislava Hristova, left the game with an injury after just seven minutes.
After Leonard made a pair of free throws with 15.8 seconds left, the Cougars missed one shot then Pinelopi Pavlopoulou had a late 3-pointer waved off.
A 3-pointer by WSU’s Chanelle Molina tied the game with 1:19 remaining before a nice drive and dish from Alexis Robinson to Zoe Correal put the Buffaloes on top with 51 seconds left. Leonard then made a steal and 1 of 2 free throws for a 70-67 lead. Molina made it a one-point game with a layup.
Colorado (14-13, 5-11 Pac-10) was 22 of 28 from the foul line to 11 of 16 for WSU.
Alexys Swedlund had 14 points to lead WSU (10-18, 3-13).
Utah 81, Washington 46: Tori Williams scored 29 points including seven 3-pointers and the Utes overwhelmed the Huskies in Salt Lake City.
The Utes (17-10, 8-8 Pac-12) led 24-23 at intermission but emerged from the break and outscored the Huskies 37-6 in the third on 14-of-18 shooting (78 percent) including 5 of 5 from beyond the arc.
Amber Melgoza led Washington (7-20, 1-5) with 27 points.
Baseball
WSU at Husker Classic: The Cougars (1-3) split their final two games of the tournament in Tempe, Arizona, picking up their first win of the season in the finale.
Wyatt Segle went 5 for 5 and the Cougars scored four runs with two outs in the eighth inning in beating UC Riverside 7-6. The Cougars loaded the bases before JJ Hancock and Cal Waterman stroked two-run singles. Ryan Walker got the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief. The Highlanders fell to 2-2.
WSU lost to Nebraska 5-3 in an earlier game Sunday. The Huskers improved to 3-1.
Gonzaga 4, New Mexico State 3: Ernie Yake’s two-out double scored Gunnar Schubert with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Bulldogs (1-2) picked up their first win of the year with a victory over the Aggies (1-2) in Surprise, Arizona.
Jake Vieth had three hits, including a double and a two-run homer for Gonzaga while Calvin LeBrun got the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief.
