The Slice: A full plate isn’t a new concept

The Slice asked readers to recall having breakfast at their grandmother’s house.

Here’s a first serving.

“The sausage my grandmother cooked was special because we shot the hog yesterday,” wrote Dave Hutton.

“In my grandmother’s kitchen, my grandfather cooked the bacon and taught me how to make scrambled eggs with ‘just a touch’ of whipping cream while my grandmother read the newspaper,” wrote May Cotton.

“My grandmother’s idea of breakfast potatoes was mashed, with a huge platter of fried chicken and lots of creamy gravy,” wrote Sharon Schawo. “They raised their own chickens and always had a milk cow around.

“Small Kansas towns in the ’40s and early ’50s … the best childhood experiences ever!”

Sell grit: “When I moved here six years ago, I described Spokane as being ‘gritty’ when writing to family,” said Catherine Short. “I have no idea why. It just seemed to be a good word to describe my new hometown. It was late November, if that has any significance.”

Blake Ballard said he has referred to clams as gritty but not Spokane.

Doppelganger Department: “My wife tells me she saw my look-alike when she was in her psychiatric training at Western State Hospital many years ago,” wrote Jerry Hargitt. “We had only been married a few months at the time.”

Feel free to draw your own conclusions.

Longtime friends: Peggy Raymond isn’t all that keen on giving out her age. But her stuffed bear, who arrived new and has been with Peggy since she was a newborn, turns 90 next month. So that’s a clue.

“He’s still alive and kicking,” said Peggy.

The stuffed bruin’s name? “No name, just Bear.”

Happy New Year: The Slice had asked about mishaps on the ice last week.

Alex Renner shared his. On New Year’s Day, he went for a bike ride (his bicycle is equipped with studded tires). Soon enough though, he wiped out on some ice.

“My head hit hard (he was wearing a helmet) as did my thigh.”

Alex, a bike racer, was initially diagnosed at the ER with a broken hip. That was later amended to a severe hamstring tear. “At least no bones were broken. Still, one hell of a way to start the 2018 season.”

Today’s Slice question: Who around here has lived in two cities that had the greatest disparity in elevation?

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; email pault@spokesman.com. What are you saving for potential use in an art project even though, so far, you just have a collection of things like old bike chains or aluminum foil beverage can covers?
