Tax plan broke democracy
Last month, President Trump and his cronies broke American democracy. Five national polls showed that Trump’s tax plan was opposed by two-thirds of Americans, but it still passed.
Why would our supposedly “representative” government pass a bill opposed by the vast majority of its people? It passed to satisfy congressional greed. When elected officials legislate for their own benefit, against the will of the people, then democracy is broken.
The majority of senators and representatives are millionaires; many are multimillionaires. Trump’s tax plan was designed to benefit them. It was written in secret with no public input or review. It contains tax cuts specifically targeting people like the president, his Cabinet and members of Congress.
Each and every member of Congress will personally benefit from the new tax structure. Their tax cuts are permanent but our tax cuts are temporary. In a few years they will personally save millions, while we are left with a growing government deficit. When the deficit needs to be reconciled, they will retire with millions and we’ll be stuck with the bill.
Most Americans saw through the swindle and opposed the plan, but that didn’t stop the greedy politicians.
