Man in custody after break in, theft of vehicle

Police say a distinct footprint, left near the scene of a break-in and vehicle theft Friday, helped them narrow their search to suspect Darrell S. Myers. (Spokane Police Department)

A crime spree Friday involving a double burglary and a stolen vehicle landed a 31-year-old man in the Spokane County Jail on multiple felony charges.

Spokane Police officers arrested Darrell S. Myers on suspicion of first degree burglary, second degree robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

Around 5 a.m. Friday morning, officers responded to a call from a home near the 2500 block of East 8th Avenue.

A resident reported that Myers had entered the home through an unlocked back door, confronted the resident and claimed he was suicidal, demanding the keys to the resident’s vehicle. The homeowner, fearing for the safety of the home’s other occupants – including two young children – provided the keys to Myers, according to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office release.

Officers arrived on the scene, checked the area and found footprints near the back door of the home, as well as the front entrance. Because Myers told the homeowner his name during the confrontation, officers were able to narrow their search, according to the release.

About 15 minutes later, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle collision in Green Acres involving the stolen vehicle, which crashed into the front yard of a residence near the 1700 block of North Arc Street.

Myers fled west on Nora Avenue and officers from the Spokane Valley Police, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane Police Department and Liberty Lake Police Department responded and attempted to locate him, according to police. Myers subsequently broke into an occupied residence in the 16900 block of East Nora. Officers arrived quickly and arrested him.
