Abortion is medical, not political

The column “Changing abortion law won’t end demand” (Gary Abernathy, July 10, 2018) requires more thought. Abortion was never a political issue until it was co-opted by religious activists. God is the chief abortionist who has caused trillions of miscarriages through his will. Why isn’t God attacked for his abortions? How can faith voters vote for candidates that worship a god that is so cruel to the unborn?

The column also failed to consider the USA’s dismal infant mortality rate (highest in the industrialized world in 2013). Many USA babies saved from abortion suffer and die before reaching their first birthday. A huge factor is lack of universal medical care for our citizens. Yes, let’s make abortion illegal and then withhold medical insurance and care from sick babies. Voting for that combination shouldn’t get you a special place in heaven.

The column didn’t mention that birth control eliminates the need for medically unnecessary abortions. Public sex education teaching pregnancy prevention is often opposed by faith voters. Abortion isn’t a law. It’s a medical procedure. Thinking is God’s best gift. Why not use it before deciding to vote? Why be so cruel to babies that are actually born?
