Spokane’s Eric Ansett tied for ninth place and Rathdrum’s Derek Bayley finished tied for 16th as the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship concluded on Friday at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Ansett, a graduate of The Oaks Academy who completed his collegiate career at Lipscomb University, shot even-par 71 in the final round to finish at 4 under par. He was eight strokes behind winner Isaiah Salinda of South San Francisco.

Bayley, who played at Washington State, finished with a 70 for a 1-under total.

Swimming

Daniel Roy placed sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. National Championships at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine, California, on Thursday.

Roy, a Gonzaga Prep grad headed for Stanford in the fall, was just three-hundredths off his lifetime best and national age group (NAG) record. Roy won the Indianapolis Pro Swim earlier this year, breaking the 17-18 NAG in the process in 2:09.73. American record holder Josh Prenot won the event at 2:07.28.

Track and field

Jake Stewart has been hired as head coach of the women’s cross country and track and field teams at Gonzaga University.

Stewart arrives in Spokane after having spent the last six seasons as the men’s cross country head coach at Illinois. He was also an assistant on the Fighting Illini track and field staff, in charge of distance running.
