Man detained at Coeur d’Alene hotel after claiming he had bomb in his car

Coeur d’Alene police detained a man Monday who claimed he had a bomb in his car.

Police said the man went into Hampton Inn and Suites near Riverstone Park at around 11 a.m. and walked up to the front desk saying he had a bomb in his vehicle. As a result, the hotel and surrounding businesses were evacuated for several hours while police investigated.

At about noon, a robot was deployed to search the vehicle, but no explosives were found.

The man was taken into custody at about 1 p.m. and was transported to Kootenai Health for a mental health evaluation, police said.

The hotel was evacuated for several hours. Guests and staff were allowed to return at around 3 p.m.

The hotel, located at 1500 W. Riverstone Drive, is in the Riverstone development off Northwest Boulevard in Coeur d’Alene.
