State 1B roundup: Top-seeded Sunnyside Christian boys, Colton girls advance to semifinals

Boys

Cedar Park Christian 36, Yakama Tribal 41: Bryan Strom scored 12 points and the Eagles squeaked by the Lions en route to an appearance in the State 1B semifinals.

CPC star senior Erwin Weary, fresh off a 30-point performance on Wednesday, had only nine points on 4-of-20 shooting from the field. Teammate Jacob Schley was only 1 for 10 from the field, his one bucket a 3-pointer.

Yakama Tribal advances to play top-seeded Sunnyside Christian in the semifinals on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Sunnyside Christian 65, Tacoma Baptist 42: A balanced attack led the Knights over the Crusaders as four players scored more than 10 points. Cade Bosma led with 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting. Chance Marsh added 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He shot 60 percent from the floor.

PJ Talen and Joey Pascua were the only Crusaders in double digits, 18 and 11 points, respectively.

SC forced Tacoma Baptist into 10 turnovers and only committed five. The Knights will face Yakama Tribal in the semifinals on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 61, Muckleshoot Tribal 51: Midway through the first quarter, Payton Nielsen had five rebounds. He turned that into 16 for the game and added 18 points to lead the Warriors over the Kings.

ACH used its athleticism and length to contest Muckleshoot Tribal’s shots. The Kings shot 33 percent from the field but stayed in the game behind their free-throw shooting and their ability to force turnovers.

ACH advances to play fifth-seeded Pomeroy in the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Sunnyside Christian 56, Selkirk 30: Emily Banks led all scorers with 20 points and six rebounds. But it was the 5-foot-2 spark, Sailor Liefke, who was the catalyst behind the Knights’ quarterfinal win.

She had 18 points, but her impact was felt more on the defensive end where her pestering nature gave her seven steals and constant worry among Rangers ballhandlers.

Sunnyside Christian advances to play top-seeded Colton in the semifinals on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Neah Bay 53, Mount Vernon Christian 34: The Red Devils only shot 39 percent from the floor, but they knocked down 11 of their 20 3-pointers in a quarterfinal win over the Hurricanes. Lalia Greene made 4 of her 5 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 16 points. Courtney Swan drained three 3-pointers and added 11 points.

Josie Droog led MVC with nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Neah Bay advances to play second-seeded Pomeroy in the semifinals. Mount Vernon Christian will play ninth-seeded Entiat in a loser-out contest.

Pomeroy 49, Entiat 39: Emma Severs scored a game-high 18 points with 10 rebounds to lead the Pirates over the Tigers and into the semifinals.

Pomeroy was in control most of the game, but the Tigers pulled within four midway through the fourth quarter.

Entiat was led by Natalya Paz, who scored 14 points on 5-of-21 shooting.

Pomeroy advances to play third-seeded Neah Bay in the semifinals on Friday at 9 p.m.
