State 1B roundup: Colton girls, Sunnyside Christian boys walk away winners

Boys

Odessa 57, Tacoma Baptist 41: Odessa came into the 2B tournament seeded sixth and left with a fourth-place trophy in hand.

Ryan Moffet ran the show again for the Tigers, scoring 20 points to keep his tournament scoring average to better than 20 points a game for the second straight tournament.

The second-leading scorer for the Tigers was Marcus King, who added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Odessa crashed the boards and jumped the passing lanes, pulling down 32 rebounds to Tacoma Baptist’s 23 and totaling seven steals.

The Crusaders had five players score, led by PJ Talen with 15 points and Bradley Swillie with 12.

Odessa had its highest finish in 1B, its second highest in school history and highest since 1999.

Tacoma Baptist earned the sixth-place trophy.

Pomeroy 69, Yakama Tribal 47: After the physical first quarter, the Pirates held a 19-16 lead. The second quarter made the biggest difference.

Pomeroy secured a 21-point advantage heading into the break after outscoring the Eagles 21-3 in the second.

Pomeroy leaned on Devon Caruso, Jacob Tewalt and Hogan Heytvelt to carry the team to a third-place finish.

Caruso led the Pirates with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting and Heytvelt grabbed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Bryan Strom had 20 points for Yakama Tribal.

Pomeroy’s third-place finish is the second highest in school history.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 69, Mt. Vernon Christian 24: Jumping out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter, the Warriors all but assured themselves the fourth-place trophy.

It didn’t get better for the Hurricanes, who were outscored by 28 over the final three quarters.

Tiffany Boutain led ACH with 23 points, hitting 7 for 12 from 3-point range. She hit no free throws and made one shot inside the paint.

Gabi Rick added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

The Hurricanes finished with 16 turnovers.

ACH earned its second fourth-place trophy and seventh overall.

Sunnyside Christian 71, Neah Bay 42: Emily Banks led the fourth-seeded Knights to a third-place finish with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

The Knights shot 48 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range.

The Red Devils were outscored 14-6 in the second quarter. A close third quarter was followed by another scoring outburst from the Knights, as they scored 26 in the fourth.

Neah Bay was led by Lalia Greene with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

Sunnyside Christian earned its 11th state trophy.

Neah Bay secured a fifth-place finish for the second time in school history.
