WIAA championships: Garfield topples Rainier Beach in OT to win boys 3A title

Garfield outscored Rainier Beach 13-4 in overtime to win the 3A boys state championship on Saturday night, defeating the Vikings 72-63 at the Tacoma Dome.

The game was tight throughout regulation with neither team leading by more than four points at the end of any quarter.

The 3A girls championship game between Garfield and Gig Harbor ran past press time.

2A boys: Lynden 57, W.F. West 53: The Lions held off the Bearcats in the final minute to win the state championship at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Lynden (22-6) led 56-46 with 37 seconds remaining but missed three free throws and committed one turnover as W.F. West (24-5) rallied but came up short.

Clayton Whitman and Christian Zamora scored 17 points apiece to lead Lynden.

W.F. West was led by Brandon White, who also scored 17.

2A girls: W.F. West 64, Archbishop Murphy 52: The Bearcats rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit and outscored the Wildcats 40-18 in the second half.

Julia Johnson scored 18 points, Erika Brumfield 16 and Kiara Steen 14 for the Bearcats (24-2).

Emily Rodabaugh scored 19 points and Maddie Hill added 11 for the Wildcats (24-2).

1A girls: The championship game between Lynden Christian and Cashmere was still in progress at press time.
