Education notebook: Sheridan fourth-grader shows he has top copy editing skills

Fourth-grader David Gallaway from Sheridan Elementary recently spotted a subtle mistake in the book his class was reading this February. The book, “Rules,” is the debut novel from author Cynthia Lord and was published by Scholastic Inc. in 2006. On page 164, it states that a party will be held at 1 p.m. David noticed that on page 167, the party is said to begin at 4 p.m.

With the help of his teacher, Amy Anselmo, David contacted the author to inform her of the mistake. Lord responded to their email.

“She was beyond impressed that David noticed the mistake,” Anslemo said. The book has been in circulation for 12 years yet no one else had caught the error.
