Spokane police have arrested a man in connection with Monday’s stabbing outside the House of Charity homeless shelter on West Pacific Avenue.

Dennis P. McElyea, 34, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of first-degree assault.

Police said the stabbing was reported about 12:30 p.m. Monday and the suspect had fled before officers arrived minutes later. The male victim was hospitalized. Police have not identified him or commented on his condition.

McElyea has a criminal history dating back to 2004, according to newspaper records. It includes a conviction for second-degree domestic violence assault and several convictions for violating protection orders.
