A day to honor
As Americans get ready to enjoy another three-day Memorial Day holiday, let us not forget the true meaning of the day.
Memorial Day is a federal holiday meant to commemorate all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. In the past, it was traditional to fly the flag at half-staff from dawn until noon and many visited cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Today, we use the long weekend to picnic, take road trips and have family gatherings. Those events are great, but let us not forget why this holiday exists.
Now, very few flags fly from front porches and attendance is minimal at memorial events. Retailers have hijacked the day to advertise and boost sales revenue from everything from autos to lawnmowers. Americans, addicted to consumerism, choose to go to the mall or search for online bargains. Should the service of our veterans be ignored?
So, fly a flag, and take an hour or two to attend a memorial event. No civilized society can afford to ignore the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.
