Architect Warren Heylman will be honored at Spokane Preservation Advocates’ Historic Preservation Awards

Spokane Preservation Advocates is honoring prominent architect Warren Heylman with a legacy award next week at its fifth annual historic preservation awards ceremony.

The nonprofit organization is holding the free ceremony this year at the Montvale Event Center on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. to recognize efforts of individuals and organizations who made significant contributions to the cultural and historic heritage of Spokane County.

Heylman designed several well-known structures in Spokane such as the Parkade, the Spokane Regional Health Building and Spokane International Airport.

Other award recipients this year include LaRae Wiley and the Salish School for preservation and education; Spokane City Councilwoman Lori Kinnear for preservation advocacy; Dan and Annette Owens for rehabilitation of the Campbell-Jones house in the West Central Neighborhood; as well as Pete & Anne Mounsey for preservation work on the Spokane Continental Bakery.

“People are spending so much money to retain our historic heritage,” said Jacqui Halvorson, chair of the SPA awards committee. “It certainly increases the value of their properties, but is certainly a huge asset to the community to have our historic and cultural heritage retained. It’s for the entire community to enjoy.”

Awards will also be presented in categories such as: preservation media; preservation corporate stewardship; preservation neighborhood advocate; preservation founders award and the Joanne Moyer award.
