Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Alabama beats No. 18 Mississippi State 24-0

Josh Jacobs ran for a touchdown and caught a scoring pass and No. 1 Alabama had its second straight shutout in a 24-0 victory over No. 18 Mississippi State on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa still battling a gimpy right knee, the Crimson Tide turned to their defense for another vintage performance.

The offense raced to a fast start but mostly stalled from there against the Bulldogs and the nation’s No. 2 scoring defense.

(2) Clemson 27, (17) Boston College 7: Trevor Lawrence threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score and the Tigers knocked Eagles quarterback Anthony Brown out of the game early in Boston.

The Tigers wrapped up a fourth straight trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game as division champions and kept rolling toward another trip to the College Football Playoff.

(3) Notre Dame 42, Florida State 13: Brandon Wimbush threw three-first half touchdown passes, Dexter Williams ran for a career-high 202 yards and the Fighting Irish routed the Seminoles in South Bend, Indiana.

(4) Michigan 42, Rutgers 7: Shea Patterson threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, Karan Higdon had two 1-yard scoring runs and the Wolverines kept their national championship hopes intact with a win over the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, New Jersey.

The Wolverines have won nine straight and remain in first place in the Big Ten’s East Division.

(5) Georgia 27, Auburn 10: Georgia struck for a pair of touchdowns late in the first half to take control and D’Andre Swift finished off the Tigers with a 77-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs cruised in Athens, Georgia.

(6) Oklahoma 48, Oklahoma St. 47: Kyler Murray passed for 349 yards and ran for 66 and the Sooners survived a late 2-point conversion attempt to beat the Cowboys in Norman, Oklahoma.

Taylor Cornelius connected with Tylan Wallace on a 24-yard TD pass to cut Oklahoma’s lead to one with 1:03 to play. Oklahoma State went for two, but Cornelius threw short and into coverage, and the pass fell incomplete.

(7) West Virginia 47, TCU 10: Will Grier threw three touchdown passes as the Mountaineers routed the Horned Frogs in Morgantown, West Virginia.

(8) Ohio State 26, (24) Michigan State 6: Drue Chrisman kept the Spartans pinned back with a sensational second half of punting, and the Buckeyes eventually pulled away for a victory in East Lansing, Michigan.

(9) LSU 24, Arkansas 17: Joe Burrow was 15 of 21 for 195 yards and a touchdown and the Tigers’ defense dominated the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

(11) UCF 35, Navy 24: McKenzie Milton threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, helping the Knights extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 22 games with a win over the Midshipmen in Orlando, Florida.

Tennessee 24, (12) Kentucky 7: Jarrett Guarantano threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Callaway on the final play of the first half and Darrell Taylor had four sacks as the Volunteers upset the Wildcats in Knoxville, Tennessee.

(14) Utah State 62, San Jose State 24: Jordan Love threw for a career-high 491 yards and five touchdowns on 32-of-42 passing in just three quarters, and the Aggies totaled 804 yards in offense in a rout of the Spartans in Logan, Utah

(15) Texas 41, Texas Tech 34: Sam Ehlinger threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Lil’Jordan Humphrey with 21 seconds left and the Longhorns beat the Red Raiders after blowing a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter in Lubbock, Texas.

(19) Florida 35, South Carolina 31: Feleipe Franks silenced the home crowd twice after touchdown runs, seemingly sending a message after getting benched last week and booed earlier in the game, and the Gators rallied to beat the Gamecocks in Gainesville, Florida.

(21) Penn State 21, Wisconsin 10: Trace McSorley tied the Penn State record for victories by a quarterback with 29, leading the Nittany Lions past the Badgers in State College, Pennsylvania.

(23) Iowa State 28, Baylor 14: Brock Purdy threw for a touchdown and ran for another score, and the Cyclones topped the Bears after a skirmish in the third quarter in Ames, Iowa.

(25) Cincinnati 35, South Florida 23: Michael Warren II ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another score, keeping the Bearcats in the chase for the American Athletic title with a win over the Bulls in Cincinnati.
