UPDATED: Tue., Nov. 20, 2018
A North Idaho woman died Monday night in a single-vehicle collision near Hauser Lake.
Idaho State Police said Mercedes A. Abernathey, 20, of Rathdrum, was driving westbound on state Highway 53 near milepost 2 when she drove off the right shoulder and struck a guardrail. She then overcorrected and slid off the left shoulder, causing the vehicle to roll and come to rest on a railroad right of way.
Abernathey was not wearing a seat belt, police said in a news release. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
