Area roundup: Idaho advances to Big Sky Conference volleyball championship match

Sarah Sharp had 20 kills and second-seeded Idaho edged sixth-seeded Northern Colorado 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10 in a Big Sky Conference Championship semifinal in Greeley, Colorado, on Friday.

The Vandals (23-9) will meet top-seeded Northern Arizona in the conference championship match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.. NAU (25-8) knocked off Idaho State 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 earlier in the day.

Kaela Straw had 19 kills and Reece Carman added 13 for the Vandals. Haylee Mathis had 50 assists while Alycia Wodke made 28 digs.

Taylor Muff led Northern Colorado with 20 kills and Daisy Schultz had 54 assists.

Men’s basketball

Whitworth 76, Trinity (Texas) 65: Ben College scored 29 points with six 3-pointers and the visiting Pirates (3-0) beat the Tigers (0-4) in a nonconference game in San Antonio.

Kyle Roach added 12 points with eight assists, and Jordan Lester had 12 points with 10 rebounds for Whitworth.

Isaiah Specks led Trinity with 16 points.

Northwest Nazarene 77, Idaho 73: Adonis Arms scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting and the Division II Nighthawks (5-0) downed the Vandals (1-3) at the Vandal Holiday Hoops Showcase in Boise.

Trevon Allen led the Vandals with 24 points and Cameron Tyson added 19 on 5 of 8 from beyond the arc.

CC Spokane 95, Olympic 80: Dedrick Pakootas scored 29 points to lead six in double-figures and the Sasquatch (1-0) topped the Rangers (0-2) at the Red Devil Classic in Longview, Washington.

Asher Cox and Garrett White scored 13 points apiece while JR Delgado added 12 points.

Michael Banks and Calvin Dennis led Olympic with 16 points apiece.

Women’s basketball

CSUN 65, Washington State 52: Channon Fluker scored 24 points and the Matadors (2-3) beat the Cougars (1-4) at the Warner Center Marriott Thanksgiving Classic in Northridge, California.

Chanelle Molina lead WSU with 20 points. Alexys Swedlund scored 13 points and Borislava Hristova added 12.

Washington 71, Duke 64: Amber Melgoza scored 18 points and the Huskies (3-1) topped the Blue Devils (2-2) in the first round of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida.

Melgoza went 6 of 13 from the field and hit all five free-throw attempts. Missy Peterson added a career-high 17 points with nine rebounds, and Darcy Rees chipped in with 10 points and five boards.

Haley Gorecki led Duke with 20 points while Leaonna Odom added 19 points with 10 rebounds.

Boise State 91, Idaho 85: Ellie Woerner scored a career-high 23 points and the Broncos (4-1) outlasted the Vandals (2-2) at the Beach Classic in Long Beach, California.

Mikayla Ferenz paced Idaho with 30 points, Taylor Pierce had 20 and Hailey Christopher (Central Valley) added 13.
