Balanced scoring leads Gonzaga’s women to fifth place at inaugural Vancouver Showcase

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Gonzaga’s women’s basketball team epitomized offensive balance Saturday.

Katie Campbell led five players in double figures with 12 points and the Bulldogs (6-1) defeated Western Kentucky 76-55 to place fifth at the inaugural Vancouver Showcase.

Campbell scored nine points in the first quarter to fuel a 19-12 advantage. She was 3 for 3 on 3-pointers during the first 10 minutes.

Laura Stockton, LeeAnne Wirth, Chandler Smith and Zykera Rice finished with 10 points apiece for the Zags.

Rice added 13 rebounds and Wirth seven as the Bulldogs outrebounded the Hilltoppers 47-29.

GU’s Jessie Loera added a game-high six assists.

“This is really a fun team to coach,” Bulldogs head coach Lisa Fortier said in a news release. “I love that we don’t feel like we have to rely on one person. I love when we get a variety of scorers and a variety of rebounders.”

Western Kentucky pulled within four points in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs answered with an 11-7 run as Campbell and Loera hit 3-pointers.

After the Hilltoppers cut the lead to four points again, the Zags converted an inbounds play with 2 seconds left for a 32-26 halftime lead.

Stockton’s steal and layup started the scoring in the third quarter, when GU extended its lead to 17 points.

Raneem Elgedawy finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for the Hilltoppers (2-6).
