Fire burns 35 acres near Cheney, evacuates trailer park

From staff reports

A brush fire sparked just outside of Cheney on Tuesday afternoon, burning about 35 acres, closing nearby roads and evacuating people from their homes.

Firefighters on scene told KHQ the fire, called the Mullinix Fire, was contained at 6:04 p.m.

Three Fire Boss airplanes, two helicopters and a bulldozer worked to contain the fire, and no structures were reported to be lost.

At 7:45, fire crews were extinguishing hotspots in the burned area in the darkness.

Peaceful Pines RV Park at 1231 W. First St. in Cheney was under a brief Level 3 evacuation, and an extended Level 2 evacuation until the fire was contained, and state Route 904 was closed.

Jill Jones, manager at the Northeast Washington Interagency Communication Center, said the call for the fire came in about 3:40. It started as a small brush fire near railroad tracks, but heavy winds made it grow quickly. The cause of the fire is not known.
