Spokane man faces drug charge after allegedly texting officer

By Tom Holm Lewiston Tribune

Sending a text to the wrong number is often, at worst, embarrassing. But a Spokane man allegedly sent a text offering to sell marijuana to a Lewiston police officer by accident and wound up with a felony charge.

Brody J. Quiggle, 37, intended to text his cousin to sell the pot, but sent the offer to Jenifer Junior High School Resource Officer Joe Stormes, who played along and informed detectives about the pending sale, according to court records.

Quiggle texted Stormes’ work-issued cellphone out of the blue Oct. 3, allegedly offering to sell him 1 pound of marijuana. Stormes did not recognize the number or know Quiggle, but agreed to the sale and told detectives. The phone number was later attributed to Quiggle and a meet-up was planned for Sunday.

Reports didn’t say if Quiggle ever had suspicions or if he asked Stormes if he was law enforcement, though it wouldn’t matter since police are allowed to lie about their status while conducting an investigation.

Quiggle drove to a department store parking lot in Lewiston to meet with Stormes and sell the marijuana for $1,350. Quiggle texted Stormes one last time, informing him what his vehicle looked like and where he was parked. Several officers walked up, and Quiggle reportedly admitted to having the marijuana and intending to sell it. He told officers where they could find the drugs in his vehicle, and officers located 446.6 grams (slightly less than 1 pound) of suspected marijuana.

Quiggle was arrested without incident and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, punishable by up to life in prison.
