Daemon Hunt scores twice as Moose Jaw edges visiting Spokane Chiefs

From staff reports

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan – The Hunt was on in bitterly cold Moose Jaw on Saturday.

Daemon Hunt scored the first two goals of his career, including the winner with 8 minutes, 11 seconds left, and the Moose Jaw Warriors edged the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 in Western Hockey League play at Mosaic Place.

Moose Jaw (4-2-2-0) hadn’t defeated the Chiefs (4-2-0-2) since December 2012. The teams play once each season.

Outside temperatures were below freezing with stiff winds, but the Chiefs’ Ty Smith was anything but cold. The defenseman, the 17th overall pick of the 2018 NHL draft by the New Jersey Devils, scored twice and had a hand in every goal.

Smith, assisted by Eli Zummack and Riley Woods, scored on a power play at 18:28 of the first period to end a scoreless tie.

Tate Popple answered at 12:50 of the second for the Warriors, but Smith’s goal a little more than 3 minutes later put the Chiefs ahead again. Jack Finley and Luke Gallagher assisted.

Hunt assisted on Brayden Tracey’s tying goal with 12 seconds left in the second period.

Hunt scored early in the final period for a 3-2 edge, but Smith and Adam Beckman set up Woods’ power-play goal at 8:02 for another tie. Woods leads the Chiefs with seven goals.

Beckman had a goal waved off before Hunt’s winner, which came off a faceoff.

Spokane is 1-1 on its Eastern road trip to six arenas over a nine-day span.
