Liberty Lake police arrest suspect in fatal hit-and-run crash

Liberty Lake police have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian last Thursday.

Pavel Kanyushkin, 21, was arrested Monday evening and faces a charge of vehicular homicide.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Country Vista Drive and East Mission Avenue. Police and firefighters responded and found a severely injured woman who later died at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The Spokane Valley branch of John L. Scott Real Estate identified the victim as 61-year-old Marilyn Dhaenens, who had been a broker with the company since 2012.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Marilyn’s husband, Scott, as well as Marilyn’s family, friends and colleagues,” the company said on Facebook. “She was and forever will be a powerful spirit in our lives.”

In an effort to identify the suspect, police had shared a photo of the red Dodge pickup truck that struck the woman.

On Friday, Chief Brian Asmus told KHQ that investigators had found the truck thanks to tips from the community. The truck was towed and searched with help from the Washington State Patrol before investigators interviewed Kanyuskin.
