Spokane Police Department Capt. Tracie Meidl is traveling to Washington, D.C., next year to be honored as the country’s chosen police officer for October 2018.

The award is part of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which gives the award every month to a police officer who holds a record of exemplary law enforcement service, has taken extreme actions in the line of duty or has shown strong record of community service, according to its website.

Meidl has served for more than 25 years as a police officer. She was a K-9 officer, a member of the Peer Assistance Team and the department’s public information officer. She now serves at the department’s South Precinct chief, which includes the South Hill, the East Central neighborhood and parts of Latah Valley.

She is married to Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl.

She helped build the Spokane Faith Alliance and helped preview Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Washington, a program that supports increased access to high-quality preschool, home visiting and expanded learning opportunities, according to a news release.

Meidl served on the Church Hospitality Team from 2004 to 2013 and is now on the Spokane Housing Ventures Board. She is also a YWCA board member, according to a news release.

“I am honored that the Spokane Police Department and our community as a whole has received National recognition around all the work being done here,” wrote Meidl in a statement. “It takes teamwork to have anything succeed and we have a great team here in Spokane. I look forward to travelling to Washington DC in the Spring for the ceremony and to see the Law Enforcement Memorial and the new National Law Enforcement Museum.”
