Silver anniversary brings Carbon Leaf to the Bartlett

A 25th anniversary traditionally calls for a gift of silver, but Richmond, Virginia’s Carbon Leaf decided to forego tradition when celebrating its 25th year as a band.

In place of silver gifts, the rootsy, Celtic-infused rock quintet is embarking on a North American and European tour, which brings them to the Bartlett on Monday.

And with that tour comes a new album, “Gathering: Volume 1,” which the band released in June.

The five-song “Gathering” marks the first new music the band – Terry Clark, Carter Gravatt, Jesse Humphrey, Jon Markel and Barry Privett – has released since 2013’s “Constellation Prize.”

“It’s an acoustic-driven album,” Privett said in a video announcing “Gathering.” “It’s a fun, vibrant album with some pretty heavy lyrical undertones. It’s the first piece of music that I’ve confronted since losing my mother five years ago.”

As the band explains on its website, “ ‘G vol. 1’ focuses in on the pull towards community, the importance of the moment, the faces of grief and the many simple gifts within arm’s reach.”

In the album announcement video, Privett also mentioned new additions to the band’s sound, likely thanks to the addition of Galway, Ireland-based We Banjo 3 on banjo, mandolin and fiddle.

“Gathering” is the first release in a four-volume series, so expect Carbon Leaf’s anniversary celebration to stretch beyond the band’s 25th year.
