Jake McGrew’s return sparks Spokane Chiefs to win over Kootenay Ice

CRANBROOK, B.C. – Jake McGrew scored two goals and added an assist in his first game after attending the San Jose Sharks camp, and Eli Zummack and Luke Toporowski chipped in with a goal and an assists apiece to power the Spokane Chiefs to a 7-4 victory over the Kootenay Ice on Friday night for their first Western Hockey League win of the season.

Woods staked the Chiefs (1-1-0-0) to a 1-0 lead at the 11-minute, 4-second mark of the first period with assists from Luke Gallagher and McGrew.

Eli Zummack added an unassisted goal to stretch the lead to 2-0 at 6:33 in the second period. McGrew’s power-play score – with assists from Nolan Reid and Zummack – increased the advantage to 3-0 with 5:55 left in the second.

After Kootenay closed to within 3-1 on Brett Davis’ power-play goal, Adam Beckman tallied his first career goal to put Spokane ahead 4-1 heading into the final period.

Matt Leduc found the net at 6:44 in the third to put the Chiefs up 5-1. The Ice scored three unanswered goals to get within 5-4 with 2:47 left to play.

Toporowski, in his first game since his stint with Team USA, scored an empty-net goal and McGrew added an empty-netter to close out the win.

Chiefs goalie Dawson Weatherill stopped 24 of 28 shots in the victory.

Spokane returns home to host Kootenay on Saturday night in the Chiefs’ home opener.
