Vancouver Giants rally to beat Spokane Chiefs in shootout

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Brayden Watts scored with a man advantage and 45 seconds remaining in regulation and the Vancouver Giants prevailed in the fourth round of a shootout to earn a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League play on Sunday.

Bobby Russell and Adam Beckman scored first-period goals to stake the Chiefs (2-1-0-1, 5 points) to a 2-0 lead and Beckman’s second goal, with 11:18 remaining in the second period, gave Spokane a 3-1 advantage. It was Beckman’s first career game with multiple goals.

Bowen Byram found the net 71 seconds later to pull the Giants (3-1) within a goal and Kaleb Bulych scored the equalizer at the 15:38 mark.

Jack Finley’s first career goal came with 39 seconds left in the second period and put the Chiefs on top 4-3 heading to the final period.

Spokane’s Eli Zummack was the only Chief to get the puck past Vancouver goalie David Tendeck in four rounds of the shootout. Davis Koch beat Chiefs goalie Dawson Weatherill in the second round and Watts added the match-winning score.

Weatherill, who entered the game with a 4.55 goals-against average, continued to struggle. He stopped 23 of 27 shots in regulation.

Spokane returns home to host Medicine Hat on Friday before entertaining Edmonton on Saturday.
