The suspect in Wednesday night’s car chase that began with a man holding a knife to his throat and ended with him being taken down by a police dog appeared in court Thursday.

Prosecutors have charged Alfredo Monge, 26, with eluding police, theft of a car, unlawful imprisonment, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license. Bond was set at $20,000 on Thursday in Spokane County Superior Court.

The incident at Monge’s mother’s house on the 1400 block of West Thorpe Road started at about 7:40 p.m., when deputies arrived to follow up on a report of a stolen Dodge Journey.

From outside, deputies saw Monge inside the house holding a knife to his throat, yelling, “I’m going to kill myself,” according to court documents.

A deputy pulled Monge’s mother out of the house, and Monge closed the door.

Monge then escaped out the back door of the house and fled in the Dodge. He drove to state Route 902 and continued eastbound at about 70 mph while being chased by deputies, according to court documents.

During the chase, Monge reportedly rammed two patrol cars, shattering one patrol car’s window.

Monge eventually was spun out by a deputy’s car near the Interstate 90 underpass on Route 902, at which point he got out of the vehicle, still holding the knife to his throat, and walked toward the overpass railing yelling, “I am going to jump,” court documents stated.

He jumped over the railing, landing on dirt and ran toward I-90, but was stopped by a police dog.

In 2016, Monge pleaded guilty to stealing a car and leading deputies on a chase from Spokane Valley to north Spokane.
