Area roundup: Whitworth sweeps Lewis & Clark to wrap up Northwest Conference baseball title
Ryan Kingma fired seven shutout innings and the Whitworth Pirates wrapped up the Northwest Conference baseball title with a 13-0 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers on Sunday in Portland.
The Pirates won the opener 18-3. Taylor Poffenroth had five hits and drove in seven runs on the day for Whitworth (19-11, 16-4), which leads the conference by four games with three left to play.
Luke Bruno singled and hit a grand slam in his sixth collegiate at-bat, driving in five for the Whits in the opener. Kingma (6-3) allowed only one hit, striking out five in the nightcap.
Washington State 8, Oregon 7 (10): Collin Montez had three hits, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Cougars (8-25, 1-11) edged the Ducks (21-13, 7-5) for their first Pac-12 Conference win of the season.
Spencer Steer hit two home runs for Oregon – a solo shot in the fourth inning and a grand slam in the ninth that knotted the score at 7 after WSU took a 7-1 lead into the seventh.
