Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels

The Mariners hit four home runs and Yusei Kikuchi earned his first major-league victory as Seattle defeated the host Los Angeles Angels 6-5 Saturday night.

Domingo Santana, Edwin Encarnacion, Daniel Vogelbach and Mitch Haniger hit solo homers for the Mariners, who improved to 11-1 on the road with their ninth consecutive away victory.

Kikuchi (1-1) allowed four runs on 10 hits in five innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. The Angels scored twice in the fifth to pull within 5-4, but the left-hander was able to get out of the inning to qualify for the victory.

Angels right-hander Trevor Cahill (1-2) gave up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, including three homers.

Of note

Angels 1B Albert Pujols reached a milestone with a run-scoring double in the third inning. That gave Pujols 1,992 career RBIs, tying him for fifth on the all-time list with Babe Ruth. Pujols passed Ruth with a solo homer in the ninth.

By the numbers

1,000: M’s 2B Dee Gordon grounded a two-run single to left field in the fourth inning for his 1,000th career hit.

Our take from right field

Kikuchi had his most ineffective start of the season, yet came away with his first victory. He had to gut it out to get through the fifth, getting Peter Bourjos to ground out on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. And the M’s continue to bash, with four more homers.

The Mariners will go for a sweep of the four-game series Sunday afternoon when right-hander Mike Leake (2-1, 3.86 ERA) takes the mound. The Angels have yet to announce their starter. Game time is 1:07 p.m.
