Hillyard proud, Hillyard strong
Well congratulations, Spokane Public Schools and city of Spokane, you once again have put the target on the low-income group, you once again have told us we don’t matter. Let me give you just a few examples:
You devastated Hillyard starting with Expo. You eliminated those very important railroads that sustained the economy in this area during the Depression.
Then you put the north-south freeway right through the remaining business district of Hillyard. Additionally, the street closures during construction will further devastate the business district.
The Spokane Lilac Festival has continually selected queens from the more affluent schools – Rogers has gotten the nod one time since 1958 when the royal court was selected from high schools. As a comparison, Ferris, which didn’t open until 1963, has received the nod 12 times.
Now Rogers gets hit again with the high percentage of burden for layoffs.
Wake up Spokane and let’s play a fair game. It shouldn’t matter whether an area is affluent or low income, the students who are there are our future and deserve the best. I am a proud graduate of Rogers and my family originates from the strong blue-collar community of Hillyard.
