Whitman Blues edge Whitworth 8-7 for NWC baseball title

UPDATED: Tue., April 30, 2019

Kyle Reisman had four hits and the Whitman Blues rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Whitworth Pirates 8-7 in the championship game of the Northwest Conference baseball tournament on Sunday at Whitworth.

With the victory, the Blues (23-17) wrapped up the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Whitworth (25-14) will need an at-large bid to make the tourney.

The Pirates advanced to play Whitman by knocking off the Pacific Boxers 6-3 Sunday morning in the completion of a game suspended by darkness Saturday night.

The Whits, who needed to beat Whitman twice to claim the title, won the first game 9-6.

Whitworth used a four-run fourth inning to grab a 6-2 lead and led 7-5 after five, but the Blues scored twice in the sixth with Reisman singling in the tying run. Reisman singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth.

Cody Simmons hit a solo home run and doubled, scoring twice for the Pirates.
