Former Gonzaga guard Josh Perkins signs with Charlotte

Former Gonzaga point guard Josh Perkins signed another contract with the Charlotte Hornets.

The NBA team on Tuesday announced the signing of Perkins and guard Joe Chealey, but didn’t disclose contract terms.

Perkins signed with Charlotte in late June prior to playing in four NBA Summer League games with the Hornets. He averaged 7 points and 3 assists. Perkins shot 35% from the field and logged 20.8 minutes per outing.

His original deal was an Exhibit 10 contract and it appears his second contract will be under the same terms. The Charlotte Observer’s Rick Bonnell tweeted that Perkins and Chealey agreed to Exhibit 10 deals. Former Washington State forward Robert Franks is on one of the team’s two two-way contracts.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a nonguaranteed deal but likely provides Perkins with an outside shot at earning a roster spot during training camp in late September. If Perkins is released, he can earn a bonus up to $50,000 if he sticks with Charlotte’s G League affiliate for at least 60 days. Exhibit 10 deals also can be converted into a two-way contract prior to the start of the regular season.

Perkins averaged 10.2 points and 4.7 assists in 153 career games at Gonzaga. The program’s all-time assists leader was a finalist last year for the Bob Cousy Award, presented annually to the nation’s top point guard. Perkins started 145 games and made 38.6% of his career 3-point attempts.

Perkins was part of 134 wins, believed to rank second in NCAA Division I history behind former Zags post Przemek Karnowski’s 137.
