Racist roots affect today

I want to thank The Spokesman-Review editors for reprinting the Baltimore Sun’s editorial regarding Trump’s disparaging and racist tweets about Rep. Elijah Cummings and Baltimore (“Better to have a few rats than to be one,” July 30).

I lived in Baltimore for six years while doing my graduate work at Johns Hopkins. Baltimore, like other urban areas, struggles with challenges which often have roots in racist policies of the past. One need only study the history of redlining, for example, to see that.

It is clear that the president of the United States will be deploying racism as an electoral strategy in 2020. Shame on him. This despicable strategy only makes America less than what it could be.
